Telephone lines crossing a deep blue and copper evening sky

POTS line retirement: what facilities leaders need to know

The copper telephone lines running into your buildings are being retired. Not eventually. Now. Carriers are no longer required to maintain the old copper network, and they are responding the way any business would: raising prices, deprioritizing repairs, and sending discontinuance notices.

For most organizations this would be a minor annoyance, except for one detail. The systems still riding on those lines are the ones you can least afford to lose.

What is actually on those lines

Fire alarm panels report to monitoring stations over analog lines. Elevator cabs carry code required emergency phones. Burglar alarms, gate controllers, fax machines, and older point of sale systems all quietly depend on copper. In our assessments, the most common finding is not risk. It is surprise. Organizations routinely discover lines they did not know they were paying for, connected to systems nobody inventoried.

Why waiting costs more

The failure mode is not gradual. A line works until a discontinuance notice arrives, and then the clock starts. Replacement solutions for life safety systems need to be selected, installed, tested, and accepted by inspectors before the old line goes quiet. Compressing that timeline is expensive. Missing it is worse.

The way through

Start with an inventory. Every analog line, every location, mapped to what actually depends on it. From there, classification is straightforward: life safety, compliance, operations, or nothing at all. You will likely find lines in that last category, and disconnecting them often funds part of the migration.

Purpose built POTS replacement solutions exist for the critical categories, engineered with battery backup and supervised connections to meet fire and elevator code requirements. The work is matching the right solution to each requirement at each site, then sequencing the migration so nothing critical goes dark.
